Solution Components
Azure SQL Database (Data Warehouse)
This is a managed relational cloud database service that is always up to date and can automatically scale resources on demand. Azure SQL Database designed to store highly organised, structured data. This can be queried using SQL or connected to reporting tools such as Power BI.
A Data Warehouse is a highly specialised tool for processing large volumes of data efficiently. The structured nature of the data allows it to be indexed and optimised for rapid retrieval. This means Power BI reports can be refreshed more rapidly as the heavy lifting has been done by the ETL processes and neatly organised into the required format within the Data Warehouse.
Power Apps
Customised business applications with user access controlled by Active Directory used to retrieve, read, and write data to the Azure SQL Database.
Azure Function Apps
A lightweight, serverless, and language independent solution which allows you to create bespoke code to handle complex ingestions which cannot be easily completed by Azure Data Factory.
Azure Synapse & Analysis Service
This could be used instead of an Azure SQL Database to leverage massive parallel processing (MPP), making it suitable for running high-performance analytics.
However, Synapse is often more costly and has a specific use, whereas SQL DB instances are flexible and cost efficient. SQL DBs can also be used for proof of concept (PoC) work, staging tables, and to explore your data.
Azure Active Directory
Active Directory leverages your existing Microsoft accounts to securely manage access to Azure services and resources for your teams with single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
Azure Data Factory
It is a modern, cloud-based solution for ETL. The best-known alternative in the Microsoft ecosystem is SSIS, however, this requires an SQL Server to schedule and run packages.
Data Factory is a PaaS (platform-as-a-service) solution meaning it uses a serverless architecture. It has cost benefits in terms of you only pay for what you use, and there are no upfront costs.
Plus, Data Factory is scalable. You are not bound by a server specification if you need to process more or less data.
Power BI
Power BI is Microsoft’s business analytics service, providing interactive visualisations and BI capabilities. An intuitive interface enables end users to create their own reports and dashboards.
The complexity of the upstream solution is hidden from reporting teams and business users. So, rather than having to cleanse and combine disparate data from multiple systems, your people can instead focus on finding valuable insights.
Azure Data Lake Storage
Azure Data Lake is designed for storing raw source data, which can be loaded into the Azure SQL Database.
The Data Lake can be interrogated by Data Scientists or Power users (MI Team) for explorative purposes. Microsoft Azure offers a Data Lake service via its storage account offering.
By exploring the Data Lake, new reporting requirements may come to light. These can then be implemented in the Azure SQL Database. The Data Lake can also be used for ad hoc analysis.
You could use Storage Blob instead of Azure Data Lake Storage as a staging area for the source data, prior to loading.
